Holiday Hashtag to Use for ALL Makers! #HandmadeisBetter2014

Facebooktwittergoogle_pluspinterest

Really over the moon about the show of excitement towards this little handmaker spotlight I am trying to shed in time for us to make waves this Holiday season. I would love for any maker to go back through your feed and hashtag your original creations for sale with #handmadeisbetter2014 . If we all join hands and do this - and also ask others to check this out - we can make a serious statement about how important it is to be able to live your passion, support dreams, and give sustainable things away during the gift giving season. Thank you so much for your shares and all of your emails. Working to get through them and promise I will, but this is one way for you to stand up and do your part. Even if you aren't a maker - many of you share your photos of things you've bought to support us! Hashtag those photos too - you plugged us for a reason. Sending Love, Blessings, Dream Like Visions and Encouragement!!

Good chilly and blustery afternoon friends and loves – I have been plugging away at a very special digital showcase for you! I decided not to do an annual trunk show this year – BKDC has been growing so much and I didn’t want the stress of something I was doing for just my work.

During a goal setting exercise I noticed a repeated theme, I really really was jazzed about working with other unique artists. So I decided to host a little online pop shop and promotion ring! This flier/ mini – site (which is still being added to!) will tell you all about the promotional deals I am offering for November and some of my peers too! We are all makers with this line of work as our primary source of income. Please take a look through the shops by clicking on their images. In the checkout make sure you let them know you found them through BethKaya’s flier! If you are an artist and would like to share a promotion with us email BethKaya@gmail.com.

Enjoy browsing! Make sure you pay attention to each shops timeline for manufacturing – our little fingers need some time to create your special pieces for the holidays!

Forever Bloom

Cherishing the warmer days as we cringe into the colder months. The flowers around here are still blooming and the tomatoes are winding down. Harvesting the last of the ripest petals and preserving them for my work. Continuing experimentation with Orgone device making out of my flowers, recycled metals from myself and some of my jewelry friends along with gemstone blessings. They are coming out really unique but resin is tough stuff, for me at least.

Continuing forward with my perfumes. I am just dizzy in love with this venture. Others are too, which is both wonderful and a little scary dually. I am seeing a lot of other designers pick this concept up to my dismay. I have to just be positive and hope that my unique and original light shines through this. I did a lot of research before I registered the copyrights for this presentation – Gems and Botanicals paired with Fragrance in a Roll On bottle. I was the first to do it – in this format. So here we are half a year from the official roll out (Despite releasing trials for the last two years) and now I am seeing them crop up everywhere. I suppose imitation is flattery? *sigh*

Here’s the master note list:

Copyright Protected Yo!

The one true thing that we do have in our corner is that copyright, first in line trademarking and my wonderful nose.

The Nose KNOWS! No one can take my special senses from me that allow me to create these explorations and celebrations of the senses! So I have updated the master note list once again just in time to start thinking about loved ones for the holidays!

*whistle whistle* Get a load of this beauty modeling some amazing pieces! Thanks for this feature Mal!

As for more experiments – I hosted my very first customer appreciation day on instagram yesterday and it went really amazing. A lot of my customers LOVE to share photos of their pieces they recieve from me. It not only supports me through digital word of mouth marketing but I have these beautiful photos! So I shared collages and special out takes along with a giveaway contest and some other fun things. I want to do this regularly! I loved the (+) buzz sharing my gratitude dug up! It’s hard not to shout it from the rooftops when you have SUCH amazing customers and connections brewing all the time.

My challenge is #selflove. I am my worst critic so my goal is to pay attention to that. To be mindful of myself, the way I show my love for myself and others as well as make sure I am doing my own thing and not worrying about those copiers we mentioned earlier! Self Love can be work! You have to step over certain feelings, chores or work to just give yourself the nourishment you really need. What are you going to pick for your #90daysofmindfulness? Comment below!

Keep tuning in on social media to see what we are getting involved with. My number one objective this winter is to keep designing and partnering with causes and artists I adore. So get in on some of that action!

“Stay Gold” First Aid Kit – Review By Meredeth Harvey

Facebooktwittergoogle_pluspinterest

Alright folkers this one’s for you.

First Aid Kits third full album, “Stay Gold”, is a folk filled, haunting journey that will leave you happily nostalgic.  This is their first album with Columbia Records and it shows a lot of potential.  It’s full of melodic harmonies, matter of fact lyrics and it has a 13 piece orchestra to boot.

Swedish sisters Johanna and Klara Söderberg began composing at a very young age.  They released their first home recorded single “tangerine” and quickly began getting airplay in Sweden.  They were eventually noticed by Jack White who invited them to record a single in his studio which got the ball rolling for the American circuit.  They became friends with Conner Oberst who brought them on stage to collaborate with Bright Eyes which led them to Mike Mogis of Saddle Creek Records. He produced their second album “The Lions Roar” which hit the Billboard Charts but never got much recognition aside from the single “EmmyLou”.

Third album, “Stay Gold”, is an eclectic mix that takes you on an emotional rollercoaster of sound.  There are a lot of parallels in with this album and the Bright Eyes album “First Day of My Life”.  It’s obvious that Oberst has influenced these sisters in all the right ways.  The album starts with “My silver lining” which is about moving forward and being empowered and it ends with “A long time ago” which makes you stop, hang your head, and relive heart break. This is the kind of album you blast with the windows down on a pretty day when you need to sing your guts out.

I’m not certain these girls have honed in on their own personal sound but I foresee good things for them in the folk market and as long as they continue to grow their sound I would imagine they will have a long and lucrative career.

You can catch them on tour in the U.S. this fall or at:

Desperately Seeking Pattie – Introducing Lady Cartelli

Facebooktwittergoogle_pluspinterest

Written By: Lady Cartelli

She is a new animal, a shock genetic mutation, and she has appeared everywhere, like a new model of a car, or an epidemic, or the flowers in Spring.

-Anthony Haden-Guest, The Birds of Britain, 1967

My most prized possession is a British, coffee table book that showcases the most phenomenal women of the London social scene in the sixties. Iconic powerhouses, women like Marianne Faithfull, Dusty Springfield, Mary Quant, Alice Ormsby-Gore, and Jane Asher (to name a few) were unique, talented, beautiful and free thinking.

Wearing Ossie Clark dresses and fraternizing with musicians like the Rolling Stones and the Beatles, these women helped shape a decade that has majorly influenced the world we live in today. After all, it was Pattie Boyd, wife of George Harrison, who got the Beatles interested in the  Maharishi, and where would music be today without the White Album as we know it? Pattie’s use of competing bold prints and over accessorizing is just as captivating today as it was in 1967.  The rebirth of bohemian style makes Pattie Boyd the perfect style muse for the coming festival season.

New Music, Meredeth Harvey

Facebooktwittergoogle_pluspinterest

Hey ya’ll!!!  I’m so excited to join the BethKaya team and work along side some of the most fabulous people ever. When I first signed on I decided that I wanted my mission to be to introduce people to new music I love.  In my search for the next “big thing” I managed to stumble upon Lake Street Dive. Lake Street Dive’s album “Bad Self Portraits” is quickly becoming my new favorite. This eclectic album brings you from bobby socks and poodle skirts into a smoke filled speak easy in a matter of minutes.  I’m kicking myself for not finding them earlier.

It has been a long time since I have come across an album where I not only like all the songs but I immediately fell in love.  The title track and first single, “Bad Self Portraits” instantly has you nodding your head where as  “Just Ask” has soul and harmonies that makes you stop everything and listen. The ups and downs of the song “Seventeen” make you go through the same mood swings every hesitant person feels when meeting a new love interest.  The versatility of the album makes it a quick, easy listen that you are sad to hear end.

Lake Street Dive is the brain child of trumpet/guitar player Mike Olson.  Their lead singer, Rachel Price has a powerhouse  voice that sounds as if Bonnie Raitt, Etta James, and Amy Winehouse had a love child.  Her voice sets the tone for the entire album with smokey overtones and powerful runs.  I hate to scream girl power (who am I kidding I love it) but upright bassist, Bridget Kearney, holds her own.  By the 3rd track, “Better Than”, you really start to feel the presence of the bass which helps aide in the jazz bar feel this album conveys.  And lets be honest, a female playing the upright is just plain hot.  With drummer Mike Calabrese keeping the beat they make a perfect collaboration that brings you to a  new sense of nostalgia. With pop cultures recent love for the post prohibition era, I see big things coming from this big sounding Quartet.  So make yourself a manhattan, sit back and let Lake Street Dive take you back to when booze was an art form and music came from the soul.
